The Story of
The Inn at Ragged Edge
The Origins (1900–1913)
In 1900, Colonel Moorhead Kennedy, a successful Pennsylvania railroad executive, envisioned a graceful summer retreat for his family. He chose this peaceful hillside above a gentle creek and commissioned one of Philadelphia’s most distinctive architects, Frank Furness, to bring his vision to life.
Completed in 1901, the grand mansion quickly became a cherished escape. Guests arrived by horse and buggy or via a private rail spur that delivered them directly to a small depot. They would cross the creek on a stone path and iron bridge before stepping into the home’s rich African Mahogany woodwork and dramatic oak staircase.
By 1913, the residence had grown with a handsome addition, becoming the largest home in Franklin County. During the elegant years that followed, the mansion hosted lively parties, parlor concerts, and distinguished visitors who gathered for music, conversation, and the simple pleasure of time away from the city.
That same spirit of warmth, hospitality, and timeless elegance still fills these rooms today.
The Guests Who
Walked These Halls
In the elegant years following the 1913 expansion, The Inn at Ragged Edge welcomed an impressive circle of distinguished guests. General John J. Pershing, French General Ferdinand Foch, and Brigadier General William W. Atterbury were among those who gathered here, along with prominent governors, senators, and corporate leaders of the era. New York and Philadelphia society traveled to enjoy parlor concerts, dances, and lively conversations beneath the rich African Mahogany woodwork.
That proud tradition of gracious hospitality — welcoming remarkable people into this historic home — continues today. Now it is your turn to walk these same halls and create new memories within these timeless walls.
The Inn Reborn (2010–Present)
In 2010, the Martin family lovingly restored the grand mansion and opened The Inn at Ragged Edge as a boutique bed and breakfast. They brought new life to the historic home while preserving its rich architectural details and timeless character.
Years later, the Kipe family expanded the vision, transforming the inn into a cherished setting for intimate weddings and special celebrations. They enhanced the grounds and created beautiful spaces where couples could enjoy the complete one-roof wedding experience.
In March 2026, Simon and Rachel Henry became the proud new stewards of The Inn at Ragged Edge. With deep respect for its Gilded Age heritage and the warm hospitality shown by every previous owner, they continue the tradition of gracious living and memorable gatherings in this extraordinary place.
The story of the inn continues — now with you as part of it.
